EDITORIAL 4 THE ABARTH WORLD The opening words by Carlo Abarth say it all. This is our world, it is our work, but above all it is our passion. Those few lines, written back in the 1950’s to introduce the cars produced by the newly founded Abarth&C, are both a starting point and a milestone for the future as we go about our everyday activity. A starting point, because they perfectly capture one man’s ingenious idea, the creative spark, the intuition without which nothing would have been possible. And a milestone for the future, because they lay out before us a journey marked by challenges, adrenaline, and competition. It is therefore in this perspective that we are proud to present you the trial issue of the new Abarth World. A publishing project concerning performance&prestazioni, a preferential channel that collects ideas, suggestions and proposals, tells stories, presents novelties and previews all over the world. But in particular a way to share the great passion that has always united us under the symbol of the scorpion. Have fun and enjoy it! It is called ‘Abarth24h’ and can be downloaded for free by Itunes from September 13th, 2011 onwards. The first available function is the ‘Abarth Community’: an interactive and steadily updated reference for the digital fans of the Scorpion and an aggregator of all physical and virtual brand initiatives. With this function its fans can be updated on the initiatives and events on schedule, invite their friends, sign up and check in at the events: all of that can be shared on Facebook, of course! THE FIRST PART OF ‘ABARTH WORLD’ IS DEDICATED TO THE GLORIES OF THE PAST LACED WITH A HEALTHY DOSE OF TRIVIA AND ANECDOTES THAT HAVE MADE ABARTH AN UNFORGETTABLE NAME. PART 1 PART 2 Karl Abarth was born on the 15th of November 1908, in Austria, and since then something in the world of racing has changed. So Karl Abarth shifted from two-wheels to sidecars; he boosted the performances and fame of this vehicle, thanks also to his strong marketing abilities. Indeed he embarked on a seemingly impossible mission: challenging and defeating the Orient Express on the 1,372 km stretch between Ostend and Paris. Karl Abarth scored one victory after another until once again a serious accident brought his sidecar adventure to an end; yet it was only the beginning of a long line of victories. During the Second World War Karl Abarth moved to Italy obtaining citizenship in exchange of his sporting victories. He devoted himself to car engines and after an intense and invaluable period at Cisitalia, in 1949 he founded ABARTH&CO. in partnership with Angelo Scagliarini, father of Guido, the driver who would then join the CARLO ABARTH racing team together with the best drivers of that time, such as Vignale, Romano and of In 1928, Karl Abarth, who at the time was very young and worked at the Moto Thun factory as a mechanic, rode a motorbike to replace an injured rider on the occasion of the qualification for the Austrian Motorcycle Grand Prix and got the best time twice, ahead of the best riders of that time. On the day of the race, Karl Abarth noticed that his motorbike had been sabotaged and decided to bring his cooperation with Moto Thun to an end. His punchy and fearless spirit enabled him to make the frame of a motorbike on his own, with which he took part in numerous races, wining all of them; unfortunately a bad accident marked the end of his motorbike racing. 11 12 THE SCORPION TALES course the legendary Tazio Nuvolari. Under the sign of the Scorpion, both the company emblem and Karl’s star sign, the team won everything possible, but the expenses to bear were too high. Hence Abarth’s genius enabled him to conceive the first modification kit for the gear and exhaust terminals of the Fiat Topolino. It was a huge success because Abarth’s kit enabled anyone to transform his or her own Topolino into a faster, more appealing and better-looking car. The brilliant manufacturer produced a range of cars, which immediately started to record their first victories; one of these cars was the extremely successful Abarth 204 model 1100 saloon car. Thanks to this, Abarth’s industrial activity increased. In the 50s the first contacts with major companies were established: Fiat, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo; yet the real turning point was the birth of the small Fiat 600, the car that marked the mass motorization in Italy, the car of popular tourism. It was while working on this car that Abarth obtained one of his masterpieces: the 750. The car became an incredible sport and commercial success; it was the car of young people, of speed-lovers; it was a small and accessible car that was fun to drive due to its sporty handling. It was the real democratization of racing cars. This small muscle car became famous all over the world and the Abarth Scorpion became a real legend. During those years Karl Abarth’s fame reached its peak, also because he started to manufacture top cars working on the mechanical basis of small production cars. Moreover this period saw the beginning of his cooperation with Pininfarina, which would make history in the world of cars. The year 13 1959 saw the birth of the Fiat 500 and the successes obtained enabled Abarth to attract the interest of Fiat, which started to reward his small company for each win achieved in official races. Of course victories were numerous and the word Abarth entered everyday language as a synonym for performance, modification, upgrading and winning spirit. It was the time of idioms, such as ‘Is it a hare? No! An Abarth rabbit!’ or ‘A laced coffee, please, I mean an Abarth coffee!’ and so on. The expression ‘small but nasty’, which has now entered everyday language, was coined for the small Abarth 500. This car has certainly become a legend, but all Abarth cars run all over the world and on all tracks. Witness the Fiat 1100, the Abarth Simca or prototypes that enabled him to win more than 800 races in 1967. Those years consolidated Abarth’s fame nationally and established it at global level. When he was 57 years old, Karl Abarth was still hungry for records and embarked on his last personal challenge against the clock. He broke the acceleration record with a Class-E single-seater on the Monza racetrack, losing 30 kilos to be able to get into the car. The successes achieved during the 70s were the last victories that Karl Abarth was able to enjoy. Even though he was a born winner, used to being a match for anything and anyone, he had to surrender to a serious disease on the 23rd of October 1979, once again under the sign of the Scorpion, under which he was born. The death of its founder marked the end of an era, but the legend of the Scorpion is still alive. So, like the phoenix, the Scorpion brand rose from its ashes, keeping alive its founder’s philosophy, punch and passion. RACING 14 RACING MADE OUR NAME. SO WHEN WE DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE RACETRACK, IT HAD TO BE IN A SHOWSTOPPER OF A CAR: THE ABARTH 500 ASSETTO CORSE, A SUPER SPORTS CAR THAT TAKES UP THE RACING BATON FROM THE LEGENDARY ABARTH 595 IN STYLE. NOT ONLY THAT, IT’S BEEN DESIGNED WITH LOW RUNNING COSTS IN MIND, PERFECTLY IN KEEPING WITH OUR PROUD TRADITION OF OPENING UP RACING TO ENTHUSIASTS EVERYWHERE. IN RACING WE TRUST! Racing is our passion, the track is our natural habitat. In this section we talk about racing and life on the track, about official Abarth competitions, and basically about anything and everything to do with the world of competition. Welcome to our natural habitat, the race track, where every car is free to unleash its power and show the world what it is made of. 35 years of single-brand trophies is quite an achievement, especially when they have one, constant, important objective: to give talented young drivers a chance to make a name for themselves and take the first steps in a sporting career. And all without having to spend a fortune. The Abarth 500 Selenia Trophy, launched in 2010, perfectly embodies this philosophy. The packed race calendar gives youngsters a chance to gain precious experience on some of the biggest and best International circuits, while collaboration with ACI-CSAI has made it possible to offer an incredible final prize for the year’s best under 25 driver: an Abarth 500 Rally. It is no surprise then, that half-way through the season, it is a nineteen year-old – Michele Tassone from Piedmont – who has shone, winning 3 races out of 4 starts. The 2011 edition of the trophy got under way in April with the Mille Miglia (which counts towards the European Rally Championship) and ends in September with two not-to-bemissed races for tradition and location: the Sanremo Rally and the Antibes Rally. In the middle, there are two races in Switzerland (the Rally Jurassien and the Rally du Chablais) and two in Italy (the Rally dell’Appennino Reggiano and the Rally delle Valli Cuneesi). Not just Rally The Abarth 500 Selenia Trophies set a prestigious benchmark on the racetrack, on circuits around the world. . After 4 rounds (Valencia, Misano, Imola and Spa-Francorchamps) of the Abarth 500 Europe Selenia Trophy and 4 of the Abarth 500 Selenia Italia Trophy (Vallelunga, Varano, Misano and Imola), the season will wind up with two major events on October 2 at Mugello and October 16 at Monza, two days in pure Racing spirit with rounds of both Trophies. In addition to the consolidated European and Italian Trophies, which are now in their third edition, the big news for 2011 is the launch of the Singe-Brand Championship in Scandinavia, with 6 meets of two races each, and the International Series that begins at the end of the year in Latin America, with races scheduled for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. As usual, the focus will be on young talents having the chance to embark a sport season on a small, but well performing and affordable car. 15 16 RACING FORMULA ACI CSAI ABARTH We are not content with resting on our laurels. That’s why, despite the excellent results in terms of participation and visibility achieved by the Italian Formula ACI-CSAI Abarth Championship 2010, we have decided to go even further. For 2011 the demanding single-seater race organised by Abarth, Fiat Powertrain Technologies and Tatuus (as part of CSAI’s “Progetto Giovani”) has doubled the number of races and has even made its debut on some of the main European circuits, further strengthening the competition’s international credentials. Already, in the first six months of this year, the future champions of the Formula Abarth European Series Selenia have had the chance to test their mettle on demanding circuits such as Valencia, Misano, Spa-Francorchamps and Zeltweg. And after the summer, the championship will end in style on the legendary circuits of Mugello, Monza and Barcelona. A truly unique opportunity to gain precious experience, make a name for themselves and reach the goal they are all dreaming of: becoming future racing stars. Good luck! Technical specifications The Aci Csai and Abarth single-seater training car was constructed by Tatuus on a carbon fibre chassis, with a 180 bhp FPT Racing 1.4 Fire Turbo engine based on the one already in use if the Abarth 500 Trophy, and Sadev transmission with a 6-speed sequential gearbox. The 1.4 Turbo engine is produced by the Racing division of Fiat Powertrain Technologies and is a brand-new version with a dry structural casing in aluminium for the singleseaters used in the Formula Aci Csai Abarth. The engine has 4 cylinders in line, is supercharged by a turbocharger, and can deliver a maximum power output of 180 bhp at 5500 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm at 3500 rpm. Notable features of this exclusive engine include the two-stage oil recovery pump and the racing-type flywheel with sintered twin-disc clutch. 17 18 19 MAKE IT YOUR RACE: and then there were 20. Take to the track like a real racing driver, but – with any luck – only after passing an initial assessment test, two days of Safe Driving lessons and a specific Racing Driving course at Varano dè Melegari (PR, Italy), where luck has nothing to do with it! The “Make it your race” contest promoted by Abarth and the daily Gazzetta dello Sport sees talented youngsters aged between 18 and 35 taking part in a sporting challenge where passion is the name of the game. The initial 3500 entrants were whittled down to 70, then 40, and now only 20. To give you an idea of just what ‘Make it your race’ is all about, here’s what someone who actually took part had to say about it: Paolo Alberto Fina is our official blogger, and this is what he had to say. “I admit it. When they talked to me for the first time about the ‘Make it Your Race’ project I was quite surprised. How can they think of letting 20 amateur drivers race for real? Won’t it be dangerous? What might happen on the first bend?. Then, after two races, I suddenly understood: this is Abarth, this is what being Abarth is all about. Everybody can and should feel like a driver because it’s written in Abarth’s DNA. The ‘Scorpion’ also means approaching people, giving them something out of the ordinary, in terms of either performance or feelings. The two driving courses and the races at Monza and Varano allowed 70 drivers to experience for themselves what Karl Abarth had in mind when he founded his company. Feeling like a driver shouldn’t be a privilege but rather an opportunity, available to as many people as possible. Fifty years on, Abarth continues to be the same Abarth that it was then, genuine and democratic. Meanwhile, new technologies have helped it to launch ‘Make it Your Race’, accessible on the Internet and social networks, and easier to be ‘experienced’.
