INTRODUCTION AND SET UP Important instructions for use and safety and traffic safety The Alfa Romeo I.C.S. (Integrated Control System) makes the driver’s task easier in controlling the main functions of the vehicle. In order to avoid creating danger for yourself and for others when using your I.C.S., please pay attention to the following points: – use of the cell phone is prohibited near explosive substances; – the I.C.S. system must be used when you are in full control of your car; in the event of doubt, stop to carry out the different operations. The navigation system allows you to reach your destination through the traffic and indicates to you any change of route memorised on the navigation CD. In fact the system takes account of all information concerning the roads when calculating the route, advising the best way. However, it does not take into consideration traffic conditions or sudden obstructions or any other inconvenience. The Alfa Romeo navigation system helps driver while he drives, by suggesting vocally or graphically, the optimum routing to reach his preset destination. WARNING: Navigation system suggestions do not excuse driver from his full responsibilities due to his driving behaviour and to his compliance with road and other traffic regulations. The responsibility for road safety always lies with vehicle driver, and it falls on him in any case. All manoeuvres must be carried out abiding by the highway code, regardless of the advice given by the navigation system. Should you leave the recommended route, the I.C.S. system will calculate a new one for you and suggest it to you. 1.1 I.C.S.: ALFA ROMEO ENHANCED COMFORT AND FUNCTIONALITY The I.C.S. controls and offers information for the following systems: – Climate control – On-board computer – Audio – Audio with DSP* system and CD* player – Telephone* – Navigation* *Optional for versions/markets where applicable. This information is then received by the RDS system and shown on the display. – scan and shuffle function; – display of name of broadcaster and number of station memorised; – Dolby B NR function for suppressing noise when listening to tapes; – function for memorising up to 36 radio stations (18 for FM range and 12 for MW range); – stand-by engagement function for traffic information bulletins (TP) with possibility of deactivation; AUTO BEST function When receiving a radio channel with the AUTO BEST function it is possible to obtain a low signal/noise (S/N) ratio, automatic seeking and tuning on alternative frequencies where the chosen radio station is broadcast- 13 ing with a better S/N ratio. When seeking a new tuning frequency broadcasting may be briefly interrupted temporarily. The AUTO BEST function is activated automatically when the radio function is selected or when a station is selected through a choice key and when the cassette player or CD player is working. All the RDS broadcasters show their name or message on the display. The current reception frequency is only displayed if information about the name of the station tuned is not. EON (Enhanced Other Network) The radio integrated in the I.C.S. system can receive EON information. The signals concerning the EON infotraffic system make reception possible from radio channels, on which you are not tuned at the moment, information about the traffic and roads, interrupting the programme of the chosen station. This function, available to RDS channels can be disabled according to preference. 14 Example: programme set RTL - RAI infotraffic programme If the infotraffic function is enabled while listening to a programme on the RTL station and in that moment a traffic bulletin is broadcast on the RAI channel, the system moves automatically from RTL to RAI. At the end of the traffic bulletin it automatically returns from RAI to RTL. 3.1.1 Radio main function page The main functions are arranged so as to allow the clear and simple display of information concerning the radio system. When the radio is operating (CD or CC not activated) the wave band, name or frequency of the current station are displayed. The list of memorised stations and the selection modes “TP” (Infotraffic),”Mute”, “Regional”, “Autostore”, “Frequency” and “Settings” are also displayed. In the lower part of the display shows general information such as the time, outside temperature, frequency or other current status information. “TP ” The traffic information box (TP) deactivated indicates that you do not want to receive traffic bulletins. Station seeking will no longer indicate whether it is a TP broadcaster and CC and CD playing will not be interrupted by traffic information. “TP” ✓ The traffic information box (TP) activated with knob 11 indicates that you want to receive traffic bulletins. Automatic seeking selects a TP broadcaster and displays this prerogative: CC and CD playing will be interrupted by any traffic bulletins. The abbreviation “TP” appears on the MAIN page. TP bulletins in progress can be interrupted pressing the volume control 21. Volume adjustment of a TP bulletin is independent of the audio source (radio, CC, CD) and is obtained using the volume control 21 during a TP bulletin. “Mute” The “Mute” function can be selected only if TP is enabled and a TP station is set. When the “Mute” function is activated only traffic bulletins will be heard. The radio “Mute” function is disabled turning the volume control 21. “Regional” “Frequency” The “Regional” function is automatically displayed if the radio programming of a determinate station is broadcast locally. In this case the AUTO BEST RDS function does not seek a station with a high S/N ratio but continues to broadcast the local channel selected. Reception of local channels can be deactivated selecting “Regional” again making it possible to move to different local stations depending on the best S/N ratio. The “Frequency” can be used to manually select the frequency with the right knob 11, though it is still possible to seek the station with keys 19 and 20. “Settings” The “Settings” function opens the “Audio settings” page (see paragraph 3.3). 3.1.2 Radio function controls Warning The AUTO BEST RDS function operates at national level. Moving to different regional stations may therefore occur. In this case it is necessary to reactivate the “Regional” function. “Autostore” The “Autostore” is active only by selecting the FM wave band with button 3. This function makes it possible to automatically start the memorising of 6 stations on 6 FM memorising buttons available. Selection takes place on the basis of the best S/N ratio starting from the last frequency explored in the FM band: it is possible that the same station be recorded more than once. Switching wave band The radio system has two wave bands UKW and MW totalling 5 bands in each of which up to 6 stations can be memorised. The band selection function takes place through keys 3 or 4 with which the following is carried out: – switching between FM-A, FM-B and FMAS with the FM key; – switching between LW and MW with the AM key. Switching between stations and memorising The station switching and memorising func- tion is obtained pressing keys 5 to 10 as follows: – memorised station selection function pressing for less than 2 seconds; – broadcasting station with RDS memorising function pressing for more than 2 seconds; – current frequency memorising function pressing for more than 10 seconds; in this case the main function page displays the letter “F” next to the station number and next to the frequency of the broadcaster memorised. Station seeking The station seeking function is activated pressing keys 19 or 20 and proceeding as follows: – pressing for less than 2 seconds starts station seeking with decreasing frequency selection (key 19) or growing frequencies (key 20); – pressing for more than two seconds starts the “scan” function, i.e. every station is tuned to allow listening for only a few seconds. The “scan” function is interrupted pressing keys 19 or 20 again. 15 3.B. 3.C. 3.1.3 Seeking and memorising stations 10 for more than 2 seconds and it is also possible to recall memorised stations with these keys (dwg. 3.C.). Automatic - Autostore During memorising the volume is lowered automatically to allow easier and clearer choice of the station. Confirmation that memorising has taken placed is obtained by checking that the memorised station name or frequency is displayed on the radio main function page. The “Autostore” function makes it possible to automatically programme the keys with the frequencies of the radio stations with the best S/N ratio (dwg. 3.B.). Manual With the manual function you can select the required wave band, pressing keys 3 or 4. The frequency is selected turning knob 11. After selection the display shows the frequency and, if it is an RDS station, also the station name. Station frequency memorising takes place pressing one of the station keys 5 to 16 3.D. 3.2 CASSETTE PLAYER FUNCTIONS 3.2.1 CC main function page The CC main function page is obtained pressing key 23 only if the cassette player is operating (dwg. 3.D). Under the “CASSETTE” window which indicates that selection of the cassette player has taken place, the direction of the tape is displayed (with the arrow), the options “TP” (infotraffic), “Dolby B NR” and “Settings”. The lower display window also displays the time, outside temperature and further current status information. “TP ” / “TP ✓ cial slot and it can be in both directions. The direction is changed pressing key 18 or automatically at the end of the tape (autoreverse). The display shows the tape direction with the arrow. ” See the explanations of chapter 3.1.1. “Dolby B NR ”/“Dolby B NR ✓ ” The “Dolby B NR” function is selected with knob 11. Activation of the function makes it possible to reduce the noise caused by running of the tape. When playing tapes recorded with the Dolby B technique, you are advised to activate this function to obtain better sound. NAVIGATION (NAV) (Optional for markets/ versions where applicable) General information The integrated navigation system (NAV) allows you to reach the selected destination through visual and acoustic instructions. Use of the navigation system is fast, convenient, safe, and above all highly flexible because you can call up already programmed destinations or reference points such as hotels, monuments, public structures, fuel stations or Authorised Alfa Romeo Services. The instantaneous vehicle position is determined by the GPS system (Global Positioning System) installed on board. The on-board GPS system is fitted with an aerial and a reception module integrated in the I.C.S. system. The system dynamically processes satellite signals, those of a sensor on a wheel and of the gyroscope integrated in the navigation computer. Warnings – GPS reception is difficult under trees, among high buildings, in multi-storey car parks, in tunnels and anywhere satellite aerial reception can be hindered. – The GPS system needs about 15 minutes for activation if it is connected to the vehicle battery. – The GPS system needs a few minutes to determine the new position of the vehicle if it is turned off and the vehicle is moved with the system off. – In the lack of satellite information, the system uses the information leading from the gyroscope and from the sensor at the wheel for temporary data analysis. – The GPS satellite aerial must not be covered with metal or damp objects. The instantaneous vehicle position is identified in the CD-ROM and shown on the display together with the topographic characteristics of the area memorised on the CD. Access to the data on the CD-ROM requires waiting a few moments in the map displays. The system constantly compares the data leading from the wheel sensor, the GPS aerial and from the programme to automatically compensate changes in temperature, pressure or any other occurrence which can falsify position detection in any way. Warnings – Precise self-adjustment of the navigation system requires approx. 50 km of travel the first time and when tyres are changed. – Continuous lack of grip at the wheels (for example skidding on ice), the system temporarily detects an incorrect position. – During precision self-adjustment the position is not detected absolutely completely. The navigation system is managed completely through the I.C.S., therefore the only operations that may be necessary are replacement of the CD-ROM to set the map of another area or an updated map. 41 left side of the boot and it has an eject key and two warning lights: – the upper light on means that the power current is on; – the lower light on means that the CDROM is on; – the lower light flashing means that the CD-ROM is being changed. Warning 5.A. 5.B. Access to the navigation main function page (dwg. 5.A.) is gained pressing button 25 (NAV) after turning on. Each time the I.C.S. is turned on a page will be shown with warnings about care in use of the system (dwg. 5.B) which, to be able to continue using the system must be confirmed pressing knob 11 or one of the main function keys. This page will no longer be displayed as long as the system is on. – Personalisation of the navigation system with the possibility of entering pre-memorised destinations with road and number. – Automatic memorising of the last 5 destinations. – Name of the current road. – Possibility to choose the route according to personal preference. – Information about current position. Display and functions – Information about arrival times. – Voice and visual instructions with indications of the distance from the destination. – System diagnostics and warnings about possible disturbances. – Detailed map in different colours and with different scales to clearly show the vehicle position, the route and the destination. Drive for navigation CD 42 The navigation CD-ROM is located on the – The navigation system only works with the CD-ROM inserted in its drive. – The CD-ROM must be removed and changed only for updating the system software, for updating the map or entering maps relating to another region. Changing the CD – When the I.C.S. is turned on the drive upper and lower warning lights are lit. – Press the eject key. – The previous CD-ROM is ejected and the lower drive led flashes. – Insert the new CD-ROM. Warnings – When the new CD-ROM is inserted the 5.C. system software is automatically updated to the new map material or to the new functions. During the time required for this operation a stand-by message is displayed. After the updating operation the destination memory is empty. – The driver is responsible for abiding by current traffic regulations, any instructions on the basis of incorrect maps which induce prohibited driving manoeuvres must NOT be followed. Software version The I.C.S. software release number can be checked selecting the climate control display page, then pressing knob 11 for at least 3 seconds. 5.D. 5.1 DESTINATION ENTRY Entering the destination is obtained selecting “Destination” with knob 11 and pressing to confirm thereby displaying the “Select destination” page with the options “Street address”, “Intersection", “Points of Interest”, “Destination memory”, “Recent destinations” and “Go back” (dwg. 5.C.). 5.E. function page for entering the city, street and number, which always show the data concerning the destination calculated last. CLIMATE CONTROL (CLIMA) Operation – inside temperature in °C or in °F – fan setting – setting air distribution: windscreen and side window vents, centre/side and rear outlets, floor vents General information The climate control functions (CLIMA) allow you to display and set the air climate control system pressing key 27 (dwg. 7.A.). – defrost device on/off – compressor on/off 7.A. – recirculation on/off – automatic operation on/off (“AUTO”) – fan adjustment (“MANUAL”). The lower part of the display shows information about the time, outside temperature, audio settings or information about: – name, conversation time (min:sec); – telephone number, conversation time (min:sec) – status (for example “received SMS message!”). 59 7.1 EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE The system makes it possible to control the passenger compartment climate maintaining the “equivalent temperature” level required by the driver. This “equivalent temperature” is an estimator of the ideal temperature (obtained through the development of a complex patented mathematical algorithm) needed to obtain the best temperature and well-being in the passenger compartment. To bring about this operating condition, select: – the “equivalent temperature” required pressing button 28; – the AUTO position pressing the button 30. WARNING The compressor can be turned on/off automatically or manually. To switch from one operating mode to the other see the “Compressor on/off button” paragraph in this chapter. 7.2 DESCRIPTION OF CONTROLS 27 - Climate control dedicated screen selector button 60 28 - Rocker button for adjusting the air “equivalent temperature” of the passenger compartment 29 - Rocker button for fan speed adjustment 30 - Automatic system operation selector button 31 - Climate control compressor on/off button Adjustment button for required equivalent temperature Pressing this rocker button up or down respectively raises or lowers the equivalent temperature required in the passenger compartment. Pressing the button upwards or downwards to the extreme HIGH or LOW positions, the functions with the highest heating or cooling power are engaged. 32 - Climate control system on/off button 33 - Rocker button for selecting air distribution 34 - Air recirculation on/off button 35 - Maximum defrosting/demisting on/off button for windscreen and front side windows, rearscreen heating, door mirror resistances and resistance at windscreen base (where applicable) 36 - Rearscreen heating and mirror and resistances in windscreen blade parking area at windscreen base (where applicable) defrosting on/off button. Fan speed adjustment button Pressing this rocker button up or down respectively increases or lowers the fan speed (thus the amount of air admitted to the passenger compartment), while maintaining the objective of the equivalent temperature required. Automatic operation button Pressing the AUTO button the system automatically adjusts the amount and distribution of air admitted to the passenger compartment. Compressor on/off Air recirculation on/off button button Pressing the ECON button turns the climate control compressor on/off. Pressing this button engages/disengages recirculation of the air admitted to the passenger compartment. WARNING With the compressor off it is not possible to admit air to the passenger compartment at a temperature below the outside temperature, in particular environment conditions, the windows may quickly steam. Climate control on/off button Pressing the OFF button turns the climate control on/off (including ventilation only). WARNING With the climate control off and in particular environment conditions, the windows may quickly steam. Passenger compartment air distribution button Pressing the MODE rocker button towards the left and/or right manually selects air distribution in the passenger compartment, while maintaining the objective of the equivalent temperature required. WARNING Depending on how the system is working (heating or cooling the passenger compartment) the recirculation function makes it possible to reach the required conditions faster. It is however inadvisable to use this function on rainy/cold days as it would considerably increase the possibility of misting the windows, especially if the conditioner is off. It is advisable to use this function when the vehicle is stationary in a queue or tunnel to prevent polluted air from entering the passenger compartment. Prolonged use of this function should however be avoided, especially if there are several persons aboard. Windscreen and front side windows demisting/ defrosting button Pressing this button the climate control automatically activates the necessary functions (quantity, distribution, temperature of the air admitted to the passenger compartment) to quicken demisting/defrosting of the wind- screen and front side windows. Rearscreen heating, door mirror heating and the resistances at the base of the windscreen (in the wiper blade parking area) are also automatically engaged (for a determinate length of time) where applicable. Rearscreen demisting/ defrosting on/off button Pressing this button engages demisting/defrosting of the rearscreen, door mirrors and (optional for versions/markets where applicable) the resistances at the base of the windscreen (in the wiper blade parking area). WARNING Do not stick stickers on the inside of the rearscreen over the heating filaments to prevent damage that might adversely affect the system. 7.3 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATING STRATEGIES Operating the button, the climate control system sets to automatically control the following functions: – temperature of the air at the vents and outlets 61 – fan speed (constantly changing) – air distribution – air recirculation – compressor engagement. It is still however possible to intervene manually on the following functions: – fan speed – FULL AUTO with automatic control of the fan speed and air distribution; – AUTO with automatic control only of the fan speed or of air distribution according to the driver’s preference; – MAN with manual operation where the driver controls the fan speed and air distribution directly. – air distribution – air recirculation – compressor engagement. The functions activated manually have priority over the automatic ones and they remain memorised until automatic control is re-activated. With one or more functions engaged manually, adjustment of the temperature admitted to the passenger compartment still continues to be controlled automatically by the system except with the compressor off: in fact, in this condition, the air admitted to the passenger compartment cannot have a lower temperature than the outside air. Pressing the button for engaging/disengaging automatic operation, the system may be in one of the following conditions: 62 Pressing the button turns the compressor on/off. With the compressor off, the air admitted to the passenger compartment can not be cooled or dehumidified and recirculation is switched off automatically to avoid misting the windows: when wanting to activate recirculation in this condition, press the corresponding button. Pressing the button again with the compressor off, will restore the operating conditions of before the compressor was turned off. Pressing the button turns off/back on the climate control, in the former case air is no longer admitted to the passenger compartment which is thus isolated from outside, in the latter, the previous operating mode is restored. Pressing the button selects the possible air distributions to the passenger compartment: Flow of air towards the windscreen and front side windows Distribution of the flow between the windscreen/front side windows and lower part of the passenger compartment Main flow of air to the lower part of the passenger compartment and secondary flow of air towards the windscreen/front side windows Distribution of the flow between the upper centre, centre and side dashboard outlets and rear outlets Flow of air towards the centre upper vent, centre and side dashboard outlets and rear outlets. If the system was in the FULL AUTO mode, pressing the button passes to the simple automatism condition: i.e. the system chooses the fan speed and mixing to obtain the equivalent temperature required, but will not change the distribution selected manually. Pressing the recirculation button , the system automatically reactivates the compressor if it was deactivated manually or au- tomatically; to maintain recirculation with the compressor of, it is necessary to press the button to deactivate the compressor. WARNING In this condition (recirculation on and compressor off), remember that the windows may steam up very quickly. Pressing the button the climate control automatically activates the functions required to quicken demisting/defrosting of the windscreen and front side windows. Rearscreen heating and door mirror heating are also automatically engaged (for a determinate length of time). WARNING When working in the FULL AUTO condition, the system can automatically engage recirculation or deactivate the compressor to cool/heat the passenger compartment faster or demist/defrost the windscreen and side windows. WARNING When the engine is turned off the system memorises the climate control operating condition, which will be automatically resumed when the engine is started again. Pressing the button engages rearscreen heating and door mirror heating for a determinate length of time. Manually setting one of the climate control functions, the others continue to be controlled automatically; in particular the air temperature is always controlled automatically to reach the required “equivalent temperature” in the passenger compartment. 63 8.
