BMW EfficientDynamics encompasses all the strategic measures developed by the BMW Group for simultaneously increasing efficiency and driving dynamics across the entire range of BMW models. This includes the overall vehicle concept, the drive train and energy management. BMW EfficientDynamics has allowed the BMW Group to reduce CO emissions of its new cars sold in Europe by more than  % since  – and by , those emissions will be half of what they were. DRIVE TRAIN. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology concept is used in all BMW petrol engines. Innovative turbocharger technology combined with High Precision Injection and the fully variable Valvetronic valve control system including Double-VANOS all improve performance, provide exceptional responsiveness even at low engine speeds and help to reduce fuel consumption. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the diesel engines combines the latest fuel injection technologies and fully variable turbine geometry with innovative turbocharger technology for enhanced efficiency and a more dynamic performance. All diesel models feature lightweight aluminium construction and are equipped with a zero-maintenance particle filter. OVERALL CONCEPT. An array of high-tech materials are used to build the BMW X, including lightweight materials like aluminium in the suspension and front of the car, high-strength steel in the car body, as well as state-of-the-art plastics and magnesium. This intelligent lightweight construction lowers the weight of various parts and makes the car body incredibly rigid, improving passive safety for the driver and passengers. The balanced weight distribution between the front and rear axles also enhances driving dynamics. ENERGY MANAGEMENT. Depending on your individual driving style, the ECO PRO Mode helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to %. Another % of savings potential can be achieved by using the coasting function (only with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission or eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission), the Route-Ahead Assistant and ECO PRO Route (both with the Navigation system Professional only). SPORTY AND EFFICIENT: THE EIGHT-SPEED STEPTRONIC SPORT TRANSMISSION. The eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission adapts to suit your individual driving style. Its range is perfect for everything from comfortable coasting through to a very dynamic driving style. In Sport mode, the gear shifts are configured for maximum performance. And even when the gears are changed manually via the gear selector lever or steering wheel gearshift paddles you can rest assured – the eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission delivers maximum efficiency and incredibly smooth gear shifts. The Automatic Start/Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traffic lights or in a traffic jam) to further reduce overall fuel consumption. When the driver presses the clutch (manual transmission) or takes their foot off the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine automatically starts up again in a fraction of a second. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the alternator generates electricity primarily when the driver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator. Previously unused kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy and fed into the battery. Unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems, Electric Power Steering only uses energy when the steering wheel is actually being turned. The standard Driving Experience Control lets the driver choose between the regular Comfort mode, the ECO PRO Mode, geared towards efficiency, or the Sport mode. The Sport mode is activated via the Driving Experience Control in the centre console. This is a pre-defined configuration of significantly more dynamic engine and suspension settings, making the engine even more responsive, the variable sport steering more direct and – in models with Steptronic transmission – ensuring that the gears are shifted at higher rpms for much sportier handling. Standard variable sport steering with Servotronic enables a direct and agile driving style with less physical effort when steering. This improves handling when using a sporty driving style as well as comfort during parking and turning. The optional Dynamic Damper Control makes it possible to adjust the damper characteristics to suit any given driving situation, thereby increasing comfort and driving dynamics. In addition to the standard Comfort setting for high driving comfort, there are two other modes available, Sport and Sport+, for an even sportier driving style. The standard intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system smoothly distributes variable drive power to the front and rear wheels for maximum traction, directional stability and safety in every driving situation. The rigidity of the five-arm rear axle enables precise wheel control – a requirement for exceptionally dynamic driving. The axle is also excellently designed for comfortable coasting. The flat design with widely placed spring struts allows for an even luggage compartment with a large loading width. DIE BMW PERFORMANCE CONTROL. The standard BMW Performance Control intervenes via engine control and controlled braking when turning, so that more power is distributed to the outer wheels and less to the inner wheels. You’ll feel safe and protected, no matter where your journey takes you.  Passenger cell: The system of beams and node connections in the functionally constructed body structure, combined with the strategic deployment of high-strength materials, delivers maximum passive safety in the event of front, side or rear crashes.  Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) continually assesses the vehicle’s movements and optimises directional stability and traction when necessary by intervening in engine and brake management. This makes it much easier to control the vehicle, even on difficult surfaces, as well as actively increases driving safety.  Airbags for the driver and front passenger are an integral part of the optimally coordinated safety components in a BMW. Driver and front passenger airbags, as well as the side airbags integrated into the front seat backrests, provide strategic protection.  Adaptive headlights with variable city and motorway light distribution, including BMW Selective Beam (anti-dazzle HighBeam Assistant) and cornering lights, actively help increase driving safety by optimally illuminating the road ahead. When the steering wheel is turned, the headlights also turn to give the driver a better view of the bend ahead.  Runflat tyres feature reinforced side walls so they don’t loosen from the rim if the air pressure drops, making it possible to continue driving to the nearest repair shop.  Approach Warning, which is part of the optional Driving Assistant package, is a camera-based safety function that detects vehicles in front and warns the driver when they are too close to the car.
