These procedures should not be attempted by “do-it-yourselfers.” NOTE: • Observe all safety notes and precautions in the service information in addition to those in this Installation Instruction. • Be careful not to damage the vehicle. • After installing the steering wheel, you must line up the steering wheel spoke angle to the straight-ahead position by adjusting the front toe. 1. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. 2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery: • Wrap a shop towel around the hood latch. HOOD LATCH (Wrap with a shop towel.) Remove the front bulkhead cover. • • Remove the intake air tube. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before you start to install the steering wheel. 2 CLIPS © 2020 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. – All Rights Reserved. DOOR OPENING SEAL (Pull away.) Remove the driver’s dashboard lower cover, and unplug the vehicle connectors, and release the vehicle sensor. Lower and pull out the steering wheel as shown, and remove the two TORX bolts. 6. Unplug the cable reel cord 1-pin connector and cable reel 2-pin connectors by squeezing and pulling up on the locking tabs. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the connectors. 4 LOCKING TABS (Pull up.) AII14304-41 (2009) Remove the airbag. Do not drop the removed airbag or hit it on an object. Place the removed airbag in a safe place with the padded surface (top) facing up. 5 of 17 www.collegehillshonda.com 8. With the front wheels in the straight-ahead position, unplug the vehicle connector from the cable reel, and loosen the steering wheel bolt. STEERING WHEEL BOLT (Loosen.) 11. Apply masking tape to the upper column cover. UPPER COLUMN COVER MASKING TAPE STEERING WHEEL PULLER STEERING WHEEL PULLER BOLT VEHICLE CONNECTOR 12. Using a plastic trim tool, release the two retaining tabs. CABLE REEL RETAINING TAB STEERING WHEEL UPPER COLUMN COVER RETAINING TAB STEERING WHEEL BOLT (Do not reuse.) 9. Using a steering wheel puller, release the steering wheel. Do not thread the steering wheel puller bolts in more than 5 mm (0.20 in.). When removing the steering wheel, take care not to move the front wheels. 10. Remove the steering wheel bolt, then remove the steering wheel. Release the upper column cover, and secure it to the dashboard with masking tape. DASHBOARD MASKING TAPE 15. Remove the lower column cover. To prevent turning from the cable reel, apply masking tape to the cable reel. Remove the cable reel. 3 RETAINING TABS 18. Remove the masking tape. Remove the steering angle sensor. NOTE: Make sure the steering angle sensor alignment tab is in the six o’clock position before disassembling. Install the steering angle sensor to the new cable reel with six retaining tabs. NOTE: Make sure the steering angle sensor alignment tab remains in the six o’clock position at all times. Engage the groove with the projection. 21. Plug the vehicle connectors into the new cable reel. 20. Remove the tape to free the vehicle 2-pin connector, and remove the dummy connector. NEW CABLE REEL VEHICLE CONNECTORS TAPE (Remove.) STEERING WHEEL COVER With paddle shifters STEERING WHEEL 24. Remove the left and right paddle shifters, and unplug the vehicle connectors. Remove the center spoke trim. 27. Remove the cable reel cord. 2 SELF-TAPPING SCREWS STEERING WHEEL CABLE REEL CORD (Do not reuse.) WASHER-SCREW STEERING WHEEL CENTER SPOKE TRIM 28. Remove the cable guide. 26. Remove the left and right vehicle switches, and unplug the vehicle connectors. STEERING WHEEL STEERING WHEEL (Do not reuse.) AII14304-41 (2009) 11 of 17 www.collegehillshonda.com 29. Install the cable guide on the new steering wheel with five retaining tabs. NEW STEERING WHEEL 31. Plug the new cable reel cord 12-pin connector into the HSW switch, and install the HSW switch on the new steering wheel. Plug the new cable reel cord 10pin connector into the left vehicle switch, and install the left vehicle switch on the new steering wheel. NEW STEERING WHEEL NEW CABLE REEL CORD 12-PIN CONNECTOR HSW SWITCH CABLE GUIDE 5 RETAINING TABS 30. Install the new cable reel cord to the cable guide with one washer-screw removed in step 27. Plug the new cable reel cord 4-pin connector into the new steering wheel 4-pin connector, and secure the new cable reel cord to the cable guide. NOTE: If the new cable reel cord looks different, follow the same procedure. CABLE GUIDE NEW CABLE REEL CORD 10-PIN CONNECTOR LEFT VEHICLE SWITCH 32. Install the control unit on the center spoke trim with two 4 x 14 mm TORX screws. CONTROL UNIT NEW STEERING WHEEL 2 TORX SCREWS, 4 x 14 mm NEW CABLE REEL CORD NEW STEERING WHEEL 4-PIN CONNECTOR WASHER-SCREW CENTER SPOKE TRIM NEW CABLE REEL CORD 4-PIN CONNECTOR 12 of 17 AII14304-41 (2009) © 2020 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. – All Rights Reserved. www.collegehillshonda.com 33. Plug the new cable reel cord 14-pin connector into the control unit, and install the center spoke trim to the new steering wheel with two self-tapping screws removed in step 25. 2 SELF-TAPPING SCREWS NEW STEERING WHEEL If the vehicle is equipped with paddle shifters, continue with step 34; otherwise, go to step 35. With paddle shifters 34. Install the left and right paddle shifters with four selftapping screws removed in step 24. Plug the two new cable reel cord 4-pin connectors into the two paddle shifter 4-pin connectors, and secure the two 4-pin connectors to the cable guide. 2 NEW CABLE REEL CORD 4-PIN CONNECTORS NEW CABLE REEL CORD 14-PIN CONNECTOR CENTER SPOKE TRIM CONTROL UNIT 2 PADDLE SHIFTER 4-PIN CONNECTORS CABLE GUIDE 4-PIN CONNECTORS OPPOSITE SIDE VIEW RIGHT PADDLE SHIFTER NEW STEERING WHEEL 4 SELF-TAPPING SCREWS © 2020 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. – All Rights Reserved. Install the steering wheel cover on the new steering wheel with four self-tapping screws removed in step 23 and two retaining tabs. 36. Remove the locking pin as shown. STEERING WHEEL COVER NEW CABLE REEL NEW STEERING WHEEL LOCKING PIN 2 RETAINING TABS 4 SELF-TAPPING SCREWS LOCKING PIN (Remove.) NEW CABLE REEL ARROW MARK Rotate clockwise until it stops. Rotate counterclockwise about three full turns until the arrow mark points up. 37. Before installing the new steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are still pointing straight-ahead. To confirm the cable reel is line up properly, rotate the cable reel clockwise until it stops, then rotate it counterclockwise about three full turns. Install the new steering wheel on the steering column shaft in the straight-ahead position: • Route the new cable reel 2-pin connectors cord through the opening in the new steering wheel. Route the new cable reel 2-pin connectors cord under the new cable reel cord, and secure it to the cable guide. • Plug the new cable reel cord 20-pin and 2-pin connectors into the new cable reel. • Check that the wire harnesses are not pinched. NEW STEERING WHEEL STEERING COLUMN SHAFT 40. Install the airbag to the new steering wheel with two supplied 6 x 23 mm TORX bolts, and plug into the two new cable reel 2-pin connectors and one new cable reel cord 1-pin connector. • Alternately tighten the right and left TORX bolts so that the gaps on the right and left sides between the airbag and the switches are even. Torque the new TORX bolts to 5.1-9 lb-ft (6.911.8 N·m). • New TORX bolts are coated with non-hardening thread lock sealant, so they cannot be reused. When installing the new steering wheel, be sure to replace the new TORX bolts with the ones included in this kit. NEW CABLE REEL CORD 1-PIN CONNECTOR NEW CABLE REEL 2-PIN CONNECTORS NEW CABLE REEL CORD 20-PIN CORD CONNECTOR NEW STEERING WHEEL NEW CABLE REEL 2 NEW CABLE REEL 2-PIN CONNECTORS AIRBAG Make sure the clearances are equal on both sides. NEW CABLE REEL CORD 2-PIN CONNECTOR AIRBAG NEW STEERING WHEEL BOLT 36 lb-ft (49 N·m) HSW SWITCH NEW CABLE REEL CORD LEFT VEHICLE SWITCH CABLE GUIDE NEW STEERING WHEEL 2 NEW TORX BOLTS, 6 x 23 mm 5.1-9 lb-ft (6.9-11.8 N·m) FRONT VIEW NEW CABLE REEL 2-PIN CONNECTORS CORD (Route under the new cable reel cord.) 39. Install the new steering wheel bolt. Torque the new steering wheel bolt to 36 lb-ft (49 N·m). At the driver’s dashboard lower cover opening, locate the vehicle relay block to install the relay as shown. 42. Under the hood, remove the relay box cover. RIGHT FRONT FENDER 2 RETAINING TABS RELAY BOX COVER DRIVER’S DASHBOARD LOWER COVER OPENING VEHICLE RELAY BLOCK 43. Plug the 15A fuse into the relay box. Check that all wire harnesses are routed properly and all connectors are plugged in. 45. Install all removed parts except for the front bulkhead cover and the intake air tube. 46. Connect the negative cable to the battery. 47. Install the front bulkhead cover and the intake air tube. 48. Connect the i-HDS, and clear the DTCs. 49. Inspect the following items. If any abnormality is found, troubleshoot as described in the service information. • Turn the ignition to ON. The SRS indicator should come on for about 6 seconds and then go off. • Make sure the horn and steering wheel switches work properly. 50. Press and hold the audio unit power button for 2 seconds to restore the audio and navi (if equipped) system functions. 51. Set the clock on vehicles without navigation. 52. If necessary, restore the systems back to normal operation as described in the service information. 53. Make sure the new steering wheel is in the straightahead position with the front wheels. If the spoke angle of the new steering wheel is not in the straightahead position with the front wheels, adjust the front toe as described in the service information. 54. Do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization as described in the service information. Check the Operation of the Heated Steering Wheel 55.
