Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. Car drivers can only pay so much attention. It’s easier to get distracted – and a rear-end collision happens more quickly – than one would think. This type of collision is responsible for around a quarter of all road accidents involving injuries in Germany. Reducing this number significantly in future is one of the aims of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. It’s a question of approach, pioneering spirit and responsibility. But what does this mean in practice? m FIND OUT MORE The Active Brake Assist is part of a bigger whole: The A-Class is fitted with the Active Brake Assist as standard. The system gives the driver a visual warning if a vehicle in front is too close. On detecting the danger of a collision there is an acoustic warning, driver braking can be assisted and, if the driver fails to react, the speed can be reduced autonomously. Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive – our generic term for intelligent technologies which actively support the driver and help to take the strain out of driving. Find out more: on your computer or tablet PC at www.mercedes-benz-intelligent-drive.com the active brake assist The distance warning function of the Active Brake Assist is based on a flush-mounted sensor in the car’s front end which continuously monitors the distance from the vehicle in front within a speed range from 7 to 250 km/h. Stationary vehicles can be registered in a speed range between 7 and around 80 km/h. 39 The reassuring feeling of driving a Mercedes-Benz. We are the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to have developed an integral safety concept, aimed at avoiding accidents, ensuring ideal responses to dangers and mitigating the consequences of accidents. For the occupants of a Mercedes and for all other road users, too. Safe driving ATTENTION ASSIST can detect typical signs of drowsiness based on steering behaviour, especially on long journeys and when driving at night, and give the driver plenty of warning if microsleep is imminent. The ADAPTIVE BRAKE control system improves braking performance through intelligent intervention: in wet conditions, the brake discs are kept dry. The brake pads are applied automatically when the driver’s foot is removed abruptly from the accelerator pedal. And on uphill slopes, the system is able to prevent the car from rolling backwards. The optional Distance Pilot DISTRONIC helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead above all in urban or stop-and-go traffic. The system is able to brake the car automatically and subsequently accelerate again as appropriate to the traffic situation. The optional Blind Spot Assist with radar sensors makes one of the major hazards in traffic visible. When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red triangle lights up in the exterior mirror. An acoustic warning additionally sounds as necessary. The system is active at speeds between 30 and 250 km/h. The optional Lane Keeping Assist system is able to detect when the car is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h, duly warning the driver by means of vibrations on the steering wheel. Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist also form part of the optional Lane Tracking package. In the event of danger The optionally available PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system is able to identify critical driving situations in advance and to initiate precautionary measures to protect the car’s occupants if there is the risk of an accident. Such measures include reversible belt tensioning or automatic closing of open side windows, for example. In an accident An extensive protection system can substantially reduce the risk of injury. This includes the active bonnet, which can spring upwards automatically by six centimetres to provide better protection for pedestrians or cyclists in the event of an impact. The car occupants, meanwhile, benefit from a high level of accident protection thanks to as many as nine airbags. After an accident Every Mercedes-Benz is highly trained in first aid. If the worst comes to the worst, the engine can be stopped automatically, the hazard warning lights and emergency interior lighting can be activated, and the central locking can be unlocked. Finally the optional Mercedes-Benz emergency call system can send position data and important vehicle information, though it is to be hoped this will never be necessary. Straight from the luxury segment to the A-Class: DYNAMIC SELECT. A small button with an astonishingly big effect. You can change between the pre-configured driving modes – “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Eco” and “Individual” – as and when you wish. Doing so alters the settings of the steering and drive system, for example, and – in conjunction with the adaptive damping – also the suspension. “Individual” mode lets you choose your own individual settings. DYNAMIC SELECT is either standard or optional, depending on model and equipment. The optional Sports Direct-Steer system adds to the comfort of speed-­ sensitive power steering with a variable ratio dependent on the steering angle. On winding roads, for example, this produces a more agile handling response and improved straight-line stability. The all-wheel drive system 4MATIC (available for certain models) ensures the best possible relation between dynamism, traction and efficiency in all driving conditions. This is made possible by fully variable torque distribution, ranging from full front-wheel drive to a 50 : 50 split. 41 About class A efficiency. The A 180 d BlueEFFICIENCY Edition featuring a raft of aerodynamic measures, a lowered body and a special transmission ratio boasts a whole package of innovations aimed at ensuring extremely low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. For every drive system variant there is an ECO display on board. Embedded in the instrument cluster, it uses various graphics to encourage the driver to adopt a fuel-saving driving style. Incidentally, the A-Class generation only saves in the right places. Many of the engines have been uprated, therefore making for an even more dynamic drive. Manual or automatic? With short, direct shift travel, the 6-speed manual transmission enables swift, smooth and easy gear shifting. The optional dual clutch transmissionn 7G-DCT allows fast, smooth gear changes without any interruptions in tractive power.
