Today, more than 140 Mercedes-Benz models are available with BlueEFFICIENCY technologies, all of which help you reduce your impact on the environment to a significant degree. Our BlueEFFICIENCY concept comprises innovations for efficient mobility as well as optimised processes all the way along the value chain. The BlueEFFICIENCY measures – the Mercedes-Benz efficiency package. Comprehensive vehicle optimisation measures save fuel and ease the burden on the environment with each model featuring a combination of the most efficient engine with latest-generation aerodynamic and energy-management measures. These include the ECO start/stop function, which is available for the majority of models. The BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 petrol engines, 24 which feature in many model series, deliver a much higher power output while reducing fuel consumption by up to 25%. BlueTEC – the clean diesel. A modular emission-control system makes BlueTEC an exceptionally clean diesel technology, as it not only removes up to 95% of the particulate matter from the exhaust gases but also reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 90%. What remains is mainly water and nitrogen. HYBRID – combustion engine and electric motor intelligently combined. The electric motor can support the combustion engine during acceleration (boost effect) or act as a generator which charges the battery during braking (recuperation). The latest-generation hybrid drive system even allows all-electric operation up to 35 km/h as well as efficient, emission-free “gliding”: at speeds below 160 km/h, the combustion engine is shut off automatically on the overrun and the drive system is disengaged. And for the first time, this technology is available with a diesel engine in a premium-class vehicle: the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID1. Innovative drive systems that break new ground: E-CELL and F-CELL. We already have a small series production run of two locally emission-free drive systems on the road: the A-Class E-CELL draws its energy straight from two lithium-ion batteries while the B-Class F-CELL uses hydrogen to generate power for the electric motor. Our vision of emission-free driving is also set to become reality in the luxury class soon in the form of the F 125! F-CELL Plug-in HYBRID. But that is not all: under the banner “Design for Environment”, we also look at a vehicle’s entire lifecycle and work hard to preserve the environment from the planning stage right through to recycling. Every B-Class delivered is a BlueEFFICIENCY model. What’s more, the International Environmental Certificate “Design for Environment” (ISO/TR 14062) attests to its high environmental compatibility, from production and usage right through to end-of-life disposal. The result: progressive, trendsetting engine technology. 4-cylinder in-line engine. The 4-cylinder powerplant with a displacement of 1.6 litres, direct petrol injection, variable valve timing and a turbocharger offers excellent torque and power and exemplary quiet-running characteristics, not to mention appropriately low fuel consumption and emissions. The variable valve control results in an optimum cylinder charge level and therefore consumption benefits, which also come courtesy of the lower weight, less internal friction plus ancillaries controlled as required. And last but not least the petrol engine has the ECO start/stop function and ECO display fitted as standard. Both help the driver to reduce consumption even further. Over and above this the BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as thermal management for an engine warm-up phase that is kept as short as possible, an oil pump controlled as required plus a particularly efficient alternator. The 4-cylinder B 180 petrol engine boasts direct injection via piezo injectors and a turbocharger Drive system & chassis 27 Diesel engine Cleaner, more efficient, more powerful: The B-Class is a showpiece for Mercedes-Benz diesel technology. The engine is quiet yet bursting with energy, offering low fuel consumption and reduced emission levels. 4-cylinder in-line engine. The 4-cylinder diesel engine offers a torquey performance and an impressive response even at a low engine speed, while also ensuring improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. Noise and vibration levels have also been significantly reduced. The engine fourth-generation common-rail system boasts ultraprecise magnet valve injectors, increased pressures of 1,800 bar and further optimised combustion chambers. The higher ignition pressure and turbocharging mean high levels of torque are available at any engine speed. A whole range of measures helps to further increase overall vehicle efficiency of the B-Class. These include tyres with lower rolling resistance, improved aerodynamics and intelligent ancillary unit management. In addition, the current engine generation boasts impressive performance and high levels of torque whilst keeping fuel consumption and CO2 emissions low. But that’s not all: the standard ECO start/stop function automatically switches off the engine at traffic lights or in a traffic jam. The standard ECO display keeps the driver informed about efficiency and encourages an economic driving style. The 4-cylinder B 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesel engine combines high levels of torque with low fuel consumption and reduced emissions Drive system & chassis 29 Transmission With the 7G-DCT Dual Clutch Transmission, whether you prefer an economical or sporty driving style – the transmission optimally matches with the engine. It impresses where shift comfort, efficiency and weight optimisation are concerned. 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission 7G-DCT. With seven forward gears and one reverse gear the Dual Clutch Transmission combines comfort, sportiness and economy in unique fashion. It comprises two sub-transmissions which each have their own clutch, with one of these sub-transmissions supporting the “even” gears and the other sub-transmission the “odd” ones. During acceleration or braking the next highest or next lowest gear is the default setting on the sub-transmission not in use at the time. When changing gear there is then a switchover to the sub-transmission currently not being used. This means that the gear change takes place without any delay or loss of traction. Both the clutch actuation and the gear change occur fully automatically, which is facilitated by particularly smooth gear shifting with virtually no interruption. The preselectable shift programs “Economy”, “Sport” and “Manual” can be set by the driver 30 via a switch on the centre console. The programs differ from one another with regard to the shift characteristics and shift speed. This means that in “Sport” mode, changing up a gear takes place at higher engine speeds than is the case in “Economy” mode, whilst changing down a gear occurs earlier. The “Manual” mode gives sportily oriented drivers the option of performing gear shifting both via the selector lever and also manually, via the steeringwheel gearshift paddles which are included in the package too. There is also an integral ECO start/stop function which reduces fuel consumption. In addition an ergonomic DIRECT SELECT lever and the cruise control functions are part of the equipment that comes with the 7G-DCT automated Dual Clutch Transmission. Paddle shift on steering wheel provides the new B-Class with an extra boost of sportiness. DIRECT SELECT LEVER with Paddle Shifts The 7G-DCT enables comfortable gear shifting with virtually no interruptions in tractive power Chassis & suspension Totally according to your requirements: the B-Class is available with the standard-specification configuration of the chassis and steering. Chassis and steering. Thanks to intelligent weight distribution, an optimised McPherson strut front axle and a specially designed four-link rear axle, the chassis developed for the B-Class facilitates maximum driving stability and ride comfort. The standard-fit rack-and-pinion steering with the integral STEER CONTROL steering assistance system for support in critical driving situations stands for precise handling. The power assistance is delivered electromechanically and adapts in accordance with the car’s speed. Agility with a high level of comfort – the comfort suspension Drive system & chassis 31 Integral safety concept The vision of accident-free driving impels us. With our integral safety concept we are coming closer to achieving this goal – this is a holistic approach which can increase safety in every situation. As the inventor of the automobile, Mercedes-Benz feels a special responsibility for road safety. This is why we are the first manufacturer to have developed an integral safety concept employing a seamless combination of active and passive safety measures to provide comprehensive protection. This integral approach is divided into four phases and offers safety solutions for every situation. These include systems for safe driving which can help the driver avoid hazards by providing a timely warning and assistance. If, despite these measures, an accident does occur, other technologies provide the appropriate degree of protection. We have also considered the time immediately after an accident and have developed solutions which can help to prevent consequential damage and enable fast assistance. A selection of these technologies for the “Safe driving”, “In an accident” and “After an accident” phases is presented on the pages which follow. 32 ATTENTION ASSIST. This innovative drowsiness detection system can be especially useful on long trips. At speeds of between 80 and 180 km/h, ATTENTION ASSIST warns the driver as soon as it detects typical signs of drowsiness or inattention. What lies behind this are sensors which analyse steering behaviour and can detect deviations from a previously determined, individual driver profile. If ATTENTION ASSIST detects signs of driver drowsiness or inattention, it recommends taking a break Safe driving: ADAPTIVE BRAKE. A driving dynamics control system with a modular structure. It offers additional safety and comfort functions alongside a base function such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). It improves the vehicle’s performance with regard to traction, handling safety and operating comfort and helps the driver to master critical braking manoeuvres. The “dry braking” function helps to remove the film of water from the brake discs – the brake’s response time and therefore the stopping distance can thus be reduced. “Priming” ensures that the brake pads are placed against the brake discs as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator pedal quickly. The time gained shortens the response time of the brakes. When moving off on an incline unintended rolling back is prevented during the space of time when the foot is moving from the brake pedal to the accelerator. If you actuate the brake pedal a second time whilst the vehicle is stationary, the HOLD function keeps the vehicle at a standstill, even if you take your foot away from the brake pedal. ESP®. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) helps to prevent the vehicle from skidding e.g. on slippery roads or when undertaking sudden changes of direction. By braking specific individual wheels, ESP reduces the tendency to either over or understeer, thus improving driving. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) enhances driving safety, especially when braking for hazards. During hard braking the Anti-lock Braking System reduces wheel lock-up by modulating the braking pressure of the individual wheels. The Anti-lock Braking System offers greater control over the vehicle in hazardous situations, e.g. during evasive manoeuvres or when braking on wet roads. It enables shorter braking distance, hence enhancing driving safety. Hill Start Assist with Hold function. Hill Start Assist with Hold function makes it easier to move off on inclines. The brake pressure is maintained for approx. two seconds after the service brake is released. The Hill Start Assist with Hold function is automatically activated from approx. 4% inclines in forward and in reverse gear. Maintenance of the braking pressure facilitates hill starting since the driver can find the biting point without having to use the handbrake & prevents the car from rolling away. Acceleration Skid Control (ASR). The Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) ensures that the wheels do not skid when accelerating. Especially when moving off on snow, ice and loose chippings, the Acceleration Skid Control prevents individual wheels from spinning and the vehicle from breaking out to the side. The Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) makes it easier to move off on snow, ice and loose chippings & reduces the vehicle’s sideways breakout when moving off. Brake Assist (BAS). Brake Assist detects emergency braking situations based on the speed with which the brake pedal is pressed, and assists the driver by increasing the brake pressure. The seven airbags fitted as standard are part of the restraint systems which are decisive in helping to mitigate the consequences of accidents Safety 33 Tyre pressure loss warning system. The tyre pressure loss warning system detects a loss of pressure based on differences in the speed of the four road wheels, and warns the driver accordingly. The tyre pressure loss warning system helps to prevent irreparable tyre damage caused by driving with flat tyres. Restraint systems: In the event of an accident. Mercedes-Benz ensures that the 3-point seat belts, belt force limiters and airbags are all coordinated optimally to minimise any injuries. In addition to the high-strength bodyshell structure and the highly stable occupant cell, seven standard-fit airbags contribute towards optimum 34 protection of the vehicle occupants: front airbags, which can be deployed in two stages, depending on the impact severity and accident characteristics, windowbags between the A- and C-pillars and sidebags for the driver and front passenger. The kneebag can further reduce the forces exerted on the driver during an accident. If the crash sensors detect an accident, the seat belts are automatically tensioned in an instant to secure the occupants in their seats. The belt force limiters, in turn, reduce the tension where appropriate in order to reduce the load on the thorax. Post-accident measures. To mitigate consequential damage and, if necessary, assist with occupant rescue, Mercedes-Benz has developed further measures such as automatic engine shut-off and activation of the hazard warning lights and emergency interior lighting. The central locking opens automatically too, and crash joints between the door and wing make it easier to open the doors after a frontal impact. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Safety 35 Panoramic Sunroof The Panoramic Sunroof opens up a whole new perspective and allows light to flood into the interior, giving a hint of that special open-air feeling. Panoramic Sunroof. The panoramic glass sunroof offers additional benefits on top of those available with the regular sliding sunroof. The size of the opening is around 33% larger than conventional sliding sunroofs, and the transparent surface area it creates is double the size of that available with conventional sliding glass sunroofs. The overall effect is a light cheerful feel with the sunblinds providing optimal protection against direct sunlight. And moreover, it’s easy to operate. Thanks to the multifunction switch in the overhead control panel. Panoramic sliding sunroof (on B 180 Sport) 36 Multimedia systems The B-Class offers Audio 20 CD multimedia system with TFT colour display. Audio 20 CD. Audio 20 CD ensures that you have an entertaining journey. The Mercedes-Benz multimedia system boasts a TFT colour display with a 14.7 cms diagonal screen. With its integral CD drive both MP3 and WMA/AAC files can be played. Audio 20 CD can be conveniently operated via the multifunction steering wheel and the Controller in the centre console, and it includes an integral telephone keypad, a Bluetooth® interface with a hands-free function and an Aux-in and USB socket in the stowage compartment on the centre console. This means that you can easily play music that you have saved on an MP3 player, smartphone or mobile data carrier, for instance. Six loudspeakers bring you pristine listening experiences perfectly tuned to the vehicle’s interior. Thanks to its integral CD drive both MP3 and WMA/AAC files can be played. High resolution colour display with a diagonal of 14.7 cm Comfort 37 EASY-VARIO-PLUS System The rear seats and luggage compartment are configured to meet a whole host of requirements, making a major contribution to the B-Class’s variability and flexibility. Rear seats. With its standard equipment the rear compartment impresses with the generous amount of legroom it offers. As part of the standard specification the rear seats come with three head restraints, ISOFIX child seat attachments with TopTether securing points are fitted to the backrests of the outer seats. Luggage compartment. If required the rear seat backrests can be folded in a ratio of 1/3 : 2/3, giving a stowage compartment of up to 1545 litres with a 1.57-metre-long, virtually flat load compartment area. When using the B-Class as a 5-seater the load compartment capacity is 486 litres. These functions are rounded off by other practical features: a load compartment cover plus bag hooks and four load retainers for securing luggage. The interior can be transformed into a virtually flat load area in just a few simple steps 38 Fully folding down the rear seats allows a load compartment capacity of 1545 litres with a practically flat load bay Comfort 39 Seats and Memory package Modular seats that meet an exceptionally wide range of requirements in terms of ergonomic design, seating comfort and safety have been developed for the B-Class . Seats. The seats for the B-Class boast high levels of seating comfort for the front and rear occupants, offering a generous amount of space for their legs and shoulders. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable as standard, for optimum adaptation to body size. The modern interior with the high-quality appeal of its materials sports a uniform look in ARTICO. Seat Comfort package. This also comprises height adjustment for the front passenger seat plus seat cushion inclination adjustment for both front seats. Numerous possibilities for ergonomic individualisation and adjustment to the preferred seat position equal yet more seating comfort – above all on longer journeys. The seats with the Seat Comfort package are also characterised by a special seat cushion design. 4-way lumbar support. The backrest curvature can be individually adjusted to meet the needs of the driver, promoting an ergonomic seating 40 position. Two air cushions are integrated in the backrests. Via two control valves they can be inflated or deflated as required, facilitating individually tailored support for the lumbar spine. The height of the air cushions is also adjustable. Memory package. The driver’s seat can be continuously electrically adjusted. The Memory package can store three individual settings for the position of the driver’s seat, head restraint and exterior mirrors. With this feature all the seat and backrest settings, the head-restraint height and exterior-mirror position on the driver’s and front-passenger side can be called up at all times at just one push of a button, and the front-passenger mirror automatically lowers when reverse gear is engaged.
