It’s rooted in your family history, shaped by life’s experiences, and evident in your ability to continually redefine your potential. This same depth of character, descended from the very first car, is what defines a Mercedes-Benz. The new CLS-Class offers expressive style, poised performance and an exquisitely crafted 4-seat cabin — like history’s most celebrated coupes, but redefined in four doors. It’s the heart of a coupe and the soul of a Mercedes-Benz. STYLE P02/03 The CLS-Class redefines what a coupe can be, without losing sight of what a Mercedes-Benz must be: passionate, innovative and athletically gifted. The victorious Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows were descended from the Daimler-powered car that won the world’s first auto race. The CLS-Class shares this bloodline, along with the heritage of some of the world’s most treasured coupes. With its seductively arched roof, broad shoulders, frameless door glass and concealed B-pillars, it offers the stylish and intimate experience you expect of a coupe — only with the accessibility of four doors. The aggressive stance of staggered-width 18" alloy wheels and tires1 hints at the physical prowess that lies within. It all comes together in a most definitive statement — a unique blend of sensation and sensibility that is distinctly Mercedes-Benz. 1 Z-rated tires are optimized for performance driving and may provide reduced ride comfort, increased tire noise, substantially increased treadwear and greater susceptibility to damage compared with H-rated tires. I T ’S M A R K E D P E R S O NA L W H E R E V E R YO U L O O K . It’s the hallmark of a luxury coupe: an interior that embraces you and creates a truly inviting environment. The CLS-Class welcomes you with an enthralling expanse of hand-finished wood — the largest single piece ever used in a modern Mercedes-Benz. Soft textures and organic shapes abound. And while the logical controls may put a wealth of information at your fingertips, a single touch of the richly crafted materials will tell you everything you need to know. Chrome-ringed gauges Elegant detail stitching 10-way power front seats ATTENTION TO DETAIL High-performance automobiles are complex, but driving one doesn’t have to be. COMAND — our standard Cockpit Management and Data system — features a large colour-LCD screen and integrates the radio, CD player, DVD-based navigation system1 and portable phone,1 to simplify multiple tasks and put important information easily at hand. COMAND can even be accessed through steering wheel-mounted controls and a multifunction display in the speedometer face. Simple iconic controls let you adjust the 10-way power front seats easily. If all of this leaves you with the impression that nothing is too small for us to fuss over, you’re right. 1 When equipped with this option. INTERIOR LUXURY P06/07 INDULGENCE SHOULD BE S H A R E D. Coupes by nature tend to be selfish. They surround you in the cozy ambience that a rakish roofline can create, and ensconce you in a very personal space. But unlike conventional two-door bodystyles, the unique 4-door design of the CLS-Class provides intimacy without entanglements. Whether you’re nestled in the 10-way power front seats or lounging in the individually contoured rear seats, you’ll enjoy the warmth of hand-fitted leather upholstery and a full-length centre console awash in hand-finished wood. And since warmth can come in many forms, we’ve also provided the added indulgence of standard heated front seats and 4-zone digital climate control. OPTIONAL HARMAN/KARDON SURROUND SOUND The available harman/kardon® LOGIC7® sound system features 12 speakers and a 7.1-channel amplifier, and provides multichannel digital surround sound for FM radio and CD playback. Using technology originally developed for the professional recording industry and optimized for the CLS-Class interior, it immerses you in sensual sound. A 6-disc in-dash CD changer is included. 4-ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL With four individual digital temperature and airflow controls and a separate rear-cabin control panel, your comfort is assured. The climate control system is so advanced, it employs a sun sensor that helps it compensate for directional sunlight. FULL-LENGTH CENTRE CONSOLE It’s not only functional, but also a work of art. The rolltop covers for the rear console compartments are each covered in matte-finish Burl Walnut wood — or highpolish Laurel wood as an option — that has been laser-cut from a single piece for continuity of grain. Inside, another luxurious touch awaits, as the main compartment is richly lined like a jewel case. CLS 500 shown in Cashmere Beige and matte Burl Walnut wood with optional Nappa leather and Active Ventilated front seats. CLS 55 AMG P08/09 CLS 55 AMG shown in Iridium Silver metallic. WE ’ L L G I V E YO U 469 R E A S O N S TO S TAY O U T O F I T S WAY. Combine the passionate design of the CLS-Class with AMG’s fanatical devotion to performance and you have the CLS 55 AMG, a car that loves to live on the leading edge. With a supercharged V-8 producing 469 hp and AMG SpeedShift™ technology providing 35% faster shifts, 100 km/h gets brushed aside in a mere 4.7 seconds,1 leaving only the rumble from four polished stainless-steel exhaust tips in its wake. And with its distinctive styling — from the prominent 3-rib grille, chiselled front apron and side sills, and subtle rear lip spoiler — it serves a visual warning to all that cross its path. Oh, and did we mention that the CLS 55 AMG also offers the civility and refinement found in every Mercedes-Benz? Better make that 470 reasons. BEHIND THE WHEEL There’s no denying the visual impact of staggered-width 19" AMG thin-spoke monoblock wheels and the visceral impact of 255/35 R19 front and 285/30 R19 rear high-performance tires.2 Look deeper and you’ll find the awesome braking power of 8-piston front calipers gripping massive 360-mm perforated discs. And to enhance the strength of the brake discs, the perforations are cast in place, since drilling could create stress points. 1 The stated rate of acceleration is based upon manufacturer’s track results and may vary depending upon model, environmental and road surface conditions, driving style, elevation and vehicle load. 2 AMG 19" wheels and accompanying high-speed-rated tires provide substantially increased treadwear and reduced ride comfort compared to H-rated tires. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon encountering road debris or obstacles. CLS 55 AMG P10/11 TH I S YE A R ’ S L O O K I N I N T I MA T E A PP AR E L F O R T H E E N T H U S I A S T. For those very special moments, we’ve made sure the CLS 55 AMG is properly attired. Multicontour front seats let you fine-tune your comfort with pneumatically adjustable side bolsters and lumbar supports. Rich perforated Nappa leather upholstery is accented by Alcantara trim in the shoulder areas and topstitching all around. And for a most intimate driving experience, Formula One-style manual shift buttons are located a mere fingertip’s reach away on the steering wheel. Stylish, sporty and seductive, the CLS 55 AMG is what every enthusiast will want to be seen in for 2006. GAUGE REACTION A 320 km/h speedometer1 is a rare thrill by any measure. And with its deep-set ivory-colour instruments highlighted by bright red indicators, the CLS 55 AMG is stimulating at any rate of travel. 1 Please obey all speed laws. Top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. STYLE BY THE FOOT Form meets function wherever you look in the CLS 55 AMG. A perfect example: racing-inspired pedals featuring the cool looks of stainless steel teamed with grippy black rubber studs. The V-8 engine’s broad, flat torque band means responsive acceleration at any speed — including a spirited 6.1-second 0–100 sprint.1 Enhancing the experience is the industry’s first 7-speed automatic transmission. With a wider range of gears than traditional automatics, you can always be in the ideal gear for rapid acceleration, while at cruising speeds you can enjoy a quieter ride and improved fuel economy. The well-mannered 7-speed even adapts to your driving style: Drive more enthusiastically, and it shifts at higher rpm. When you’re in a more relaxed mood, it glides between gears to maximize efficiency. 5.0-liter V-8 POWER: 302 hp 300 TH A N I T L O O K S . E V E N FA S T E R There’s a difference between style and design. Great design must include equally outstanding function. So when the breathtaking lines of the CLS-Class were drawn, we never lost sight of performance. That’s why under that sleek hood is a powerful and responsive 302-hp V-8 in the CLS 500, and an earth-trembling supercharged 469-hp V-8 in the CLS 55 AMG. Each is teamed to an advanced automatic transmission that adapts to your driving style and features Touch Shift control for the joy of manual-style shifting. All because the excitement of owning a Mercedes-Benz has to be far more than skin deep. 7 RPM x1000 EXTRA-STRENGTH If the CLS-Class pushes the envelope of design, the CLS 55 AMG’s 469-hp Kompressor V-8 makes sure it’s nothing less than express delivery. Handcrafted by a single technician who affixes his signature to it, each engine features such racing-derived ingredients as aluminium pistons forged for strength, a crankshaft individually balanced to reduce vibration, and camshafts aggressively profiled for a spine-tingling rush to redline. For maximum exhilaration, the V-8 employs a helical supercharger and liquid-to-air intercooler for a 516 lb-ft rush of torque starting at just 2,650 rpm. With a driver-adaptive 5-speed automatic transmission offering the manual control of steering wheel-mounted buttons, 0–100 km/h in a scorching 4.7 seconds1 can be yours in a snap. 1 Stated rates of acceleration are based upon manufacturer’s track results, and may vary depending upon model, environmental and road surface conditions, driving style, elevation and vehicle load. CLS 500 shown in Capri Blue metallic with optional Keyless Go and Active Bi-Xenon headlamps with washers. HANDLING P14/15 ADMIT IT. YO U L I K E TO T A K E CO N T R O L . While the CLS-Class is designed to treat everyone on board exceedingly well, we do play favourites — the driver comes first. So if you have a controlling interest in an automobile, you’ll be pleased to find Airmatic, an advanced semi-active air suspension that gives precise response and lets you dial in your preferred blend of ride and handling. It only takes one turn to appreciate the outstanding road feel of speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering, and with our pioneering Electronic Stability Program (ESP),1 the unmatched confidence to handle whatever may come your way. CLS 500 shown in Iridium Silver metallic with optional AMG Sport Package. MULTILINK SUSPENSION For legendary control, the CLS-Class employs a 4-wheel multilink suspension featuring antidive geometry for exceptional poise, even under severe braking. A Mercedes-Benz innovation, the 5-arm rear multilink design controls rear-wheel movement with outstanding precision, making it ideal for rearwheel drive — the choice of driving enthusiasts for its pure power delivery and precise steering feel. AIRMATIC DUAL CONTROL Airmatic DC semi-active air suspension provides optimal ride comfort, yet instantly firms up as driving dynamics demand crisp response. Self-levelling Airmatic can even raise or lower the ride height — automatically, or at your pushbutton command. ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM The CLS-Class has ESP, a handling advantage that allows it to react quickly and confidently to the onset of skidding in curves. ESP continuously monitors your steering and braking actions while you’re cornering and compares them to the actual vehicle path. If it senses the onset of plowing (understeer) or fishtailing (oversteer), ESP brakes individual wheels and/or reduces excess engine power, to help keep you on course.1 ESP also incorporates all-speed traction control to help control wheelspin during acceleration. ADAPTIVE DAMPING SYSTEM The Adaptive Damping System (ADS II) lets you tailor your driving experience with three selectable driving modes — two for sport and one for comfort — at the touch of a button. ADS II continually optimizes ride and handling by individually adjusting each wheel’s shock-absorber rate every time the wheel changes its direction of up–down travel. 1 No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. SAFETY P16/17 WE ’ V E S P E N T 65 Y EA R S P R E P AR I N G F O R T H E N E X T 1 /4 S E C O N D. ENHANCED 4-WHEEL DISC BRAKES The CLS-Class features an advanced 4-wheel disc braking system, including 4-piston front calipers for impressive stopping power. Equally impressive, Sensotronic — the electrohydraulic braking system in the CLS-Class — can automatically determine the most effective brake pressure to apply at each wheel individually, adding up to better control. Lift your foot off the accelerator quickly, and the system sets the brake pads nearer to the discs for even quicker response. Turn on the windshield wipers, and periodically and imperceptibly the brakes are applied to keep them drier and ready for action. EMERGENCY-SENSING BRAKE ASSIST Mercedes-Benz research has shown that drivers tend not to brake hard enough, soon enough, in an emergency. Our engineers developed Brake Assist to help overcome this tendency. Upon sensing panic stopping based on the speed at which you depress the brake pedal, Brake Assist automatically applies all available power braking boost immediately. By helping to eliminate the delay caused by human nature, Brake Assist can potentially reduce your overall stopping distance when it matters most.1 BODY STRUCTURE AND CRUMPLE ZONES The CLS-Class uses advanced technology and robust materials to create a virtual fortress for its four occupants. High-strength/low-alloy steel is used in critical areas throughout the vehicle. Roof pillars employ three layers of steel. Full-width front and rear crossmembers, along with a reinforced floorpan, doors and door sills, combine to provide formidable protection in a variety of impacts. Advanced front and rear crumple zones progressively deform to help absorb the energy of an impact, while underhood components are staggered to help prevent their stacking up in a severe frontal impact, to reduce the likelihood of intrusion into the cabin. An ellipsoidal front bulkhead helps channel some of the forces of a severe frontal impact under, over and around the passenger cabin. While the protective systems of the CLS-Class are quite complex, our underlying philosophy of safety is really quite simple. First, the most survivable accident is the one that never happens. To that end, along with its responsive handling, the CLS-Class features pioneering Mercedes-Benz safety technology such as Electronic Stability Program (ESP), all-speed traction control, and emergency-sensing Brake Assist. If avoidance is impossible, the CLS is designed to protect you with an advanced integrated restraint system that includes a rollover sensor and the 10-way protection of eight air bags, all wrapped in a tremendously strong body structure. Because even though we hope you’ll never experience an accident, we’ve been continually researching and innovating to better protect you in those precious moments for well over half a century. ROLLOVER SENSOR If the CLS-Class senses certain rollovers, it will automatically deploy the seat-belt Emergency Tensioning Devices to help reduce occupant movement and, if deemed necessary, inflate the Head Protection Curtains.2 10-WAY AIR BAG PROTECTION The CLS-Class features the 10-way protection of an eight-air-bag system comprised of dual-stage front air bags, front and rear side-impact air bags, and full-length Head Protection Curtains that deploy along the front and rear side windows on the affected side, to help protect both front and rear occupants from head injury and broken glass in certain side impacts or rollovers.2 SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION Reinforced doors, side sills and floorpan are part of an integrated safety design that also includes high-strength seat structures, all of which work in concert to afford considerable protection in side impacts. Four side-impact air bags and Head Protection Curtains further enhance occupant protection. 1 No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. 2 WARNING: THE FORCES OF A DEPLOYING AIR BAG CAN CAUSE SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY TO A CHILD UNDER AGE 13. THE SAFEST SEATING POSITION FOR YOUR CHILD IS IN THE REAR SEAT, BELTED INTO AN APPROPRIATE, PROPERLY INSTALLED CHILD SEAT, OR CORRECTLY WEARING A SEAT BELT IF TOO LARGE FOR A CHILD SEAT. A CHILD UNDER 13 MUST NOT USE THE FRONT SEAT UNLESS THE CHILD IS BELTED INTO AN APPROPRIATE, PROPERLY INSTALLED BABYSMART-COMPATIBLE CHILD SEAT AND THE “PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF” INDICATOR REMAINS ILLUMINATED. At time of press, the toddler seat (for children 9–18 kg) is not approved for use in Canada. SEE OPERATOR’S MANUAL FOR ADDITIONAL WARNINGS AND INFORMATION ON AIR BAGS, SEAT BELTS AND CHILD SEATS. AMG SPORT PACKAGE P18/19 NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE PO W E R OF A FIRST IMPRESSION. The first time you see the CLS 500 with the optional AMG Sport Package, you know. From the aggressive AMG-design front air dam to the rear apron draping dual chromed oval exhaust tips, the message is subtle but unmistakable: Muscle. Talent. Confidence. You can see it in the sculpted side sills framed by massive 18" AMG double-spoke alloy wheels.1 You can feel it as you execute shifts through the steering wheel-mounted fingertip shift controls. Is it an unfair world where so much is judged by first meetings? That would depend entirely on the impression that you make. 1 AMG 18" wheels and accompanying high-speed-rated tires provide substantially increased treadwear and reduced ride comfort compared to H-rated tires. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon encountering road debris or obstacles. Also included are high-performance Bi-Xenon headlamps that produce a bright blue-white light to provide better vision over longer distances when using either low or high beams. They also incorporate dynamic level control to help cut glare, as well as high-pressure washers. On CLS 500 models without the AMG Sport Package, this option further includes cornerilluminating front foglamps, which illuminate with the turn signals to help brighten your way into dark driveways or alleys. They are also activated by the steering at speeds up to 40 km/h, to help improve the illumination of a curving roadway ahead. 03 PARKTRONIC SYSTEM Parktronic can help you avoid objects that might be outside of your sightlines when parking your CLS-Class. When ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers detect objects in their field of view, audible signals and illuminated displays on the dash and rear cabin ceiling help you manoeuvre with confidence. 02 DISTRONIC ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL The first of its kind, Distronic reduces the need to continuously adjust your cruise control setting. By employing a radar signal to monitor your distance to vehicles ahead, the system adjusts to help maintain your speed and preset following distance automatically.2 05 DRIVE-DYNAMIC FRONT SEATS Drive-Dynamic seats automatically adapt in response to cornering forces, rapidly inflating and deflating the side bolsters for active lateral support. 04 KEYLESS GO This optional enhancement of the SmartKey system lets you unlock your CLS-Class by grasping the outside door handle — without removing the key from your pocket or purse. Startup is equally easy: Put your foot on the brake, tap the top of the gearshift, and you’re ready to take off. After you park, touch a button on the outside door handle to lock the car. 01 02 06 07 06 COMAND DVD-BASED NAVIGATION This modular system, available either as a factory option or dealer-installed accessory, uses GPS satellites to determine the location of your car. Detailed driving instructions are provided through the COMAND system’s large colour-LCD screen, with the maps for Canada, the contiguous U.S., and Hawaii, all from a single DVD.3 07 HARMAN/KARDON LOGIC7 SOUND SYSTEM The optional harman/kardon® LOGIC7® sound system features 12 speakers and a 7.1-channel amplifier for incredible digital surround sound. It includes a single-feed 6-disc CD changer concealed behind a motorized, wood-trimmed panel in the dash, and can be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel. 03 04 08 08 ELECTRONIC TRUNK CLOSER This convenient option allows you to close the fully open trunk simply by pressing a button on the driver’s door or inside the trunk lid. A button on the SmartKey or on the driver’s door motors the trunk lid fully open, too — a great convenience when approaching with your arms full of packages. 09 ACTIVE VENTILATED FRONT SEATS Optional Active Ventilated front seats use miniature internal fans to circulate air through perforations in the upholstery, and include the heating feature. 10 ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS These all-season floor mats are a great way to keep the carpet of your CLS-Class in top condition. Deep channels trap large amounts of water, mud and melting snow. They’re easy to clean, and available in black, grey or tan, with four mats per set. 05 09 10 11 RUN-FLAT TIRES WITH LOW-PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM A CLS 500 option, extended-mobility tires 4 (not shown, and not available on the CLS 55 AMG) can be driven a limited distance after a loss of air pressure in a tire. The low-tire-pressure warning system alerts the driver if a loss of pressure has occurred. 1 Standard on CLS 55 AMG. 2 Distronic adaptive cruise control is no substitute for active driving involvement. It does not react to stationary objects, nor recognize or predict the curvature and lane layout of the road or the movement of vehicles ahead, and it can only apply a maximum of 20% of vehicle braking power. It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. 3 While the navigation system provides directional assistance, the driver must remain focused on safe driving behaviour, including paying attention to traffic and street signs. The driver should utilize the system’s audio cues while driving and should only consult the map or verbal displays once the vehicle has been stopped in a safe place. DVD-ROM maps do not cover all areas nor all routes within an area. 4 Delayed availability. See your dealer. TELEMATICS P22/23 I’ve locked my keys in the car. Where is my nearest Mercedes-Benz dealer? AMG SpeedShift programming provides up to 35% faster gear changes, automatically downshifts during braking, prevents unwanted upshifting in corners, and features torque converter lockup in all forward gears. Fingertip manual mode allows direct-access shifting through forward gears via buttons on back of upper steeringwheel spokes (left button downshifts, right button upshifts) or via Touch Shift feature of shift lever, and will automatically intervene only to select 1st gear when the vehicle stops. In Sport and Comfort modes, the steeringwheel buttons operate the Touch Shift feature. Included with optional AMG Sport Package, fingertip shift control allows driver to operate Not available. Rear-wheel drive. 2.65:1 2.65:1 TRACTION / STABILITY Electronic Stability Program ESP compares the driver’s intended course, via steering and braking inputs, to the vehicle’s response, via lateral acceleration, rotation (yaw) and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). ESP also integrates all-speed traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained.2 PERFORMANCE Acceleration, 0–100 km/h3 Fuel economy, city estimate highway estimate 6.1 seconds Information not available at time of printing. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon encountering road debris or obstacles. 6 Z-rated tires are optimized for performance driving and may provide reduced ride comfort, increased tire noise, substantially increased treadwear and greater susceptibility to damage compared with H-rated tires. 7 Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake system maintenance, and tire and road conditions. Electronically controlled pneumatic spring-struts integrate variable-rate shock absorbers and coil springs. ADS II continually optimizes ride and handling by automatically selecting one of four damping profiles for each spring-strut every time a wheel changes its direction of up–down travel. Dual driver-selectable sport modes engage firmer damping profiles either full-time or at lower thresholds of body movement. Sensotronic electrohydraulic braking transmits brake pressure individually to each wheel based on driver input and various vehicle parameters. Sensotronic more precisely controls brake pressure at each wheel in normal braking, emergency stopping and ESP activity.2 Automatic Brake Drying applies the brakes lightly and briefly based on windshield wiper use and driver braking intervals, to reduce moisture on the brake surfaces in wet weather. Predictive Brake Priming sets the brake pads near to the discs when the driver quickly releases the accelerator, for faster brake response. ABS senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together (to help maintain stability) as needed up to 30 times per second, to prevent lockup and maintain steering ability. Sensotronic eliminates the pedal pulsation commonly associated with conventional brake systems and ABS. Brake Assist senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance by eliminating the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough.
