They designed one specifically for our twisting and crowded European roads. They ensured that it combined a tough disposition and genuine packhorse load-lugging capacity with more doors, seats and a pleasant drive. And they added a level of sophistication only previously associated with upper end saloons. So now you can run your pick-up to the building site, the beach, or the bistro, all thanks to Mitsubishi. Highly manoeuvrable, with a relatively light chassis and highly regarded 4WD systems, traction is simply never in question. Indeed, the L200 is spider-like over the steepest terrain, climbing seemingly impossible angles with ease. This admirable ability when the going gets tough has been honed in some of the most arduous conditions on earth and, at heart, it is down to two iconic drivetrains. The Easy Select system, in operation on 4Life models, features 2WD for tarmac, two 4WD modes and a rear differential lock, ensuring traction even on sand, mud or rocky surfaces; on all other models the Super Select system automatically locks the centre differential when in the off-road modes. On Barbarian models, these locked settings are now further enhanced by an off-road mode selection option to optimise engine output, transmission and braking in various conditions - gravel, mud/ snow, sand or rock - and are complimented by the newly introduced Hill Descent Control. And on the Barbarian X a 360° camera system provides a bird’s eye view, helping to spot the safest path from the comfort of your cab. Maximising space has always been a Mitsubishi strong point and, despite its relatively compact size, the L200’s cabin provides better legroom than any other cab in the class. The seats are better too. Drivers find their position car-like, sitting down snuggly instead of in the traditional pick-up perch. Double Cab rear seat passengers are cosseted with a 25° reclined seat-back and great headroom, making this their pick of the pick-ups too. It was the very first pickup to feature a traction control system, an active safety feature that works alongside innovations like ABS with EBD (which adjusts the level of braking power applied between the front and rear wheels, depending upon the load), Brake Assist, and the Emergency Stop signal System which automatically alerts other drivers to a hazardous situation. Now, L200 features like the Lane Departure Warning system, Forward Collision Mitigation (which warns of an imminent collision), Blind Spot Warning (a real boon for motorway driving), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (equally as useful when reversing) and the clever Ultrasonic mis-acceleration Mitigation System are the new yardstick in pickup world.
